Practical Opulence
I do sincerely thank Mr Luhrmann and his recent work in 'The Great Gatsby'.
Art Deco trended last around 2008, but it was quite a subtle homage to the theme. However, this film has inspired some fantastic trends in clothing, accessories and decor, which have completely overthrown previous, subdued tributes.
While it is all well and good to appreciate the sheer opulence contained within the film, it is very difficult for the regular Jane to pull of this look every day. Not everyone can get away with wearing full flapper regalia to work, and fox fur is a tad taboo in this day and age. There are some adorable pieces which can be worn every day, giving the nod to the opulence of The Great Gatsby, but without the need to explain that you are not in fact headed to a themed soiree.
If you are feeling particularly shy, you could try the Gunmetal Filigree Cut Out Drop Earrings from Lovisa (1). At $12.99 they are an affordable way to dip your toe into this trend, and can be paired with a pair of skinny jeans and tie-neck blouse, or a simple dress for work or dinner.
If you are a smidge more brave, you may look to the Diva Pistachio Crystal & Stone Ornate Necklace (2). With a price tag of $29.99, this is a cheap way of acknowledging this current trend, and is versatile enough to wear once 'all things Gatsby' are cold again. Dress up your work attire, or get dressed for the town, this piece will connect you to the current trend, without a major financial investment.
Speaking of major financial investments, there is the Monique Lhuillier Vintage Hexagon Ring (3). At $5,156 you really need to ensure your adoration of this style is not fleeting. Honestly though, if you are rocking this rock, you are pretty secure in yourself and your styling, and not one to blindly follow trends.
If you are diving in the gigantic circular pool and getting your Gatsby on with gusto, then the Will Hope Love Art-Deco Beaded Dress (4) is a perfect fit. $399.99 will secure you this silver beaded, silver screen worthy piece. Admittedly it is not something to pop on for a visit to your local bowling club, it is timeless and a solid investment in chic. Keep it simple with accessories, as this dress does all the talking.
Pefer your hair to do the talking? Hit Etsy for an Art Deco Hair Comb (5). For $51.91 you can tart up your tresses and add some Gatsby greatness any day of the week, or for a special event. While there is no need to only pair this with 1920s styled hair, it certainly would enhance your overall look.
Finally, if you are digging the Art Deco vibe, but just not into the bling, you may be more interested in something like the Bogetta Veneta Dress. Don't expect it to be cheap, but it is certainly a stylish segue! At 1170 British pounds, you will need to decide if it is the sale of your right or left kidney which will fund this purchase, but dang you will look good!
Regardless of if you daintily shuffle towards this trend, or leap head first into bling, the Gatsby trend is here right now. While it will dilute over time, and shift to more of a mainstream integration, but creators such as Baz Luhrmann will continue to thrust new and exciting trends towards us for our digestion. The decision to nibble or inhale is entirely yours.
