Oh Make Me Over! Tallboy Edition
My obsession with chalk paint continues. This time though, I have been making my own!
Many thanks to Google and Pinterest for providing information, hints and tips on how to make your own chalk paint for a fraction of the price charged for the pre-made stuff. There were some awesome comparisons between making chalk paint with plaster of Paris, or grout, but the idea of making chalk paint with actual chalk dust kinda appealed to me and generally speaking it got the best reviews from those making their own.
Thanks too to ebay, for allowing me to purchase calcium carbonate en masse. My 5kg bag arrived in the mail. Nothing sus, just a massive bag of white powder.
The process for this tallboy makeover started back in October as part of the Garage Sale Trail. I eagerly plotted my plan of attack for local garage sales, on the hunt for a tallboy and bedside tables. No joy on the bedside table front (at the point of the Garage Sale Trail, but success followed a few weeks later - keep checking back the blog, they have been made over too...) but I found this tallboy at my first stop. 50 bucks. Solid wood. Sold.
Then it rained for what seemed like 40 days and 40 nights so I got antsy that I could not paint my tallboy! Thank you to my very understanding husband for talking me down from some "too humid to paint when all I want to do is paint" rages.
It took about 4 coats to cover the very dark wood, but our bedroom is very light with creams and pastels, so I needed to lift the colour and have continuity among all of the furniture in the bedroom. I chose an ever so off white, Lord knows what its name is, because there are thousands of shades of white! This looks white when it is by itself, but when it is near white it looks more cream. Anywho!
The handles are from Etsy. I had wanted crystal handles but a) they cost a bomb and b) the holes from the original handles were quite large, so I had to make sure the new handles were large enough to fully cover the holes. Massive thank you to the lady from Etsy who I purchased these off WallpaperYourWorld. Fabulous communication and a very quick delivery from the USA. Reasonable postage costs to boot!
I am absolutely loving this finished project, our bedroom is feeling pretty much finished and no longer just a bed in a super large room.
Hopefully my handles for my bedside table project arrive shortly so that I can blog all about them and their new lease on life!
